City of Tawas City – Ordinance to Amend the Zoning Ordinance
The City of Tawas City Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on March 3, 2026, at 6 pm to recommend adoption of an ordinance to amend the Zoning Ordinance to the City Council. The public hearing will be held at the Tawas City Hall at 550 W Lake St, Tawas City. The proposed amendment amends Section 4.05 (R-1 Single-Family Residential District, Section 4.06 (R-1 High Density Residential District), and Section 4.09 (Waterfront District) to require a minimum setback, from the ordinary high water mark, of 35 feet on Lake Huron for lots north of the intersection of the Tawas River and Lake Huron and 50 feet on Lake Huron for lots south of the intersection of the Tawas River and Lake Huron, and 15 feet on all other waterways. The Zoning Board of Appeals may approve a lesser waterfront setback after evaluating surrounding conditions and determining that granting the lesser waterfront setback will not be detrimental to abutting property. The standards in Section 8.04 shall not apply when granting a lesser waterfront setback.
