The Board of Review consists of three City residents appointed by the City Council. The Board operates in accordance with the Michigan General Property Tax Act and regulations established by the State Tax Commission.
The primary responsibility of the Board of Review is to hear and decide appeals regarding property assessments, taxable values, and property classifications to ensure fair and equitable property taxation within the City.
March Board of Review
The organizational meeting of the Board of Review is held annually on the Tuesday following the first Monday in March. The Board then meets for a minimum of 12 hours over a two-day period, typically during the second week of March, to hear assessment appeals from property owners.
Meeting dates and times for the March Board of Review are published in the Iosco County News-Herald and included with the Change of Assessment notices mailed by the City Assessor.
July and December Board of Review
The Board also meets on:
- The Tuesday following the third Monday in July
- The Tuesday following the second Monday in December
These meetings are held to address clerical errors and mutual mistakes of fact, including matters related to Principal Residence Exemptions, as authorized under Section 211.53b of the Michigan General Property Tax Act.
