The Treasurer’s Department is responsible for the management, collection, safeguarding, and distribution of all municipal funds for the City. The department plays a vital role in maintaining the City’s financial integrity and ensuring that public funds are managed in a responsible, accurate, and transparent manner.
Working closely with the City Manager, the Treasurer’s Department assists in the preparation and administration of the City’s annual budget and coordinates with the City’s independent auditors to complete the annual financial audit in compliance with state and local regulations.
The department oversees the receipt and processing of city revenues, including property taxes, utility payments, permit fees, and other municipal revenues. In addition, the Treasurer’s Department is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of City funds to ensure financial stability and maximize returns in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
The City also serves as the property tax collection agency for multiple taxing authorities, including the County, State Education Tax, Tawas Area Schools, and the Intermediate School District (IRESA), in addition to collecting City property taxes. The Treasurer’s Department works to ensure timely and accurate tax collection and distribution to all applicable entities.
